Search for a JCB 3CX service manual and you will find a dozen PDFs that all look the same. They are not. JCB has published at least eleven service manuals for the 3CX family over the years, each for a different serial number range or machine generation. Clamp pressures, hydraulic circuits, engines, transmissions and wiring change between them, so the wrong book can send you after the wrong part.
This guide shows how to read your serial plate, how to tell the old and new manual formats apart, and which publication matches your machine. Everything in the tables below is taken from the title pages of the manuals themselves.
Step 1: read the serial number from the identification plate
Every JCB backhoe loader has a machine identification plate with the model and serial number. Write down the full number exactly as it is stamped. The manuals explain where the plate is and how to read it:
- older manuals (9803/32xx): Section 1 – General Information → Machine Identification Plate and Typical Vehicle Identification Number (VIN);
- newer manuals (9813): 01 – Machine → 01-06-03 Model and Serial Number.
If the plate is missing or painted over, the serial number is often also on the chassis and in the machine's documents. When in doubt, send us what you have and we will help you narrow it down.
Step 2: lettered or numbered manual?
JCB 3CX service manuals come in two formats, and the difference is visible on the title page:
- Lettered sections (publication numbers starting 9803/): sections 1, 2, 3 followed by A Attachments, B Body & Framework, C Electrics, D Controls, E Hydraulics, F Transmission, G Brakes, H Steering, K Engine and, in later issues, L Servo Controls. The machine number range is printed on the title page.
- Numbered sections (publication numbers starting 9813/): 01 Machine, 03 Attachments, Couplings and Load Handling, 06 Body and Framework, 09 Operator Station, 12 HVAC, 15 Engine, 18 Fuel and Exhaust, 21 Cooling, 24 Brakes, 25 Steering, 27 Driveline, 30 Hydraulic System, 33 Electrical System, 72 Fasteners, 75 Consumables, 78 After Sales. The serial coverage is listed inside, under 01-06-03 Model and Serial Number.

Step 3: match your serial number to the manual
Lettered-section manuals (9803/32xx)
| Manual | Models | Machine numbers (title page) | Pages |
|---|---|---|---|
| 9803/3260 | 3CX, 4CX & variants | 400001 to 460000 | 702 |
| 9803/3270 | 3CX, 4CX, 214, 215, 217 & variants | 460001–499999, 920001 on; 900001 on (North America) | 711 |
| 9803/3280 | 3CX, 4CX, 214e, 214, 215, 217 & variants | 930000 onwards; 903000 onwards (USA) | 1212 |
| 9803/3290 | 3C, 3CX, 4CX | 960001–989999, 1327000–1349999, 1616000–1625999; 907001–919999 (North America); 1297000–1349999 (China) | 1912 |
Two of these ranges are open-ended ("onwards"), so a serial number can appear in more than one row. In that case the later publication is usually the better match, but send us the number and we will confirm before you buy.
Numbered-section manuals (9813)
| Manual | Models | Issue (title page) | Pages |
|---|---|---|---|
| 9813/7800 | 3CX | Issue 1, 04/2017 | 1832 |
| 9813/6650 | 3CX | Issue 3, 02/2018 | 1732 |
| 9813/6950 | 3CX, 4CX, 5CX | Issue 3, 01/2018 | 3864 |
| 9813/7000 | 3CX, 4CX, 5CX | Issue 2, 01/2018 | 3522 |
| 9813/6900 | 3CX, 4CX, 5CX, 5CX Wastemaster Eco | Issue 6, 09/2018 | 4150 |
| 9813/5450 | 3CX Compact | Issue 5, 11/2017 | 1434 |
| 9813/4250 | 3CXG | Issue 6, 03/2018 | 1842 |
The 9813 manuals do not print a serial range on the title page. Several of them cover the same model names for different engine and emission versions, so this is where most buyers go wrong. Send us the serial number and we will check it against the 01-06-03 page of each book.

JCB sold the same machines under different names in North America. The 9803/3280 manual gives the equivalents: 3CX = 214 and 4CX = 214S, 215S, 217S. If your machine says 214 or 217 on the side, the manuals above that list those models apply. Check the serial number as well: some manuals list a separate North American range.
Service manual, parts manual or operator manual?
- Service manual – how to test, dismantle, repair and adjust: specifications, pressures, torque settings, wiring diagrams, fault finding. This is what you need for a repair.
- Parts manual – exploded views and part numbers for ordering. Useful alongside the service manual, not instead of it.
- Operator manual – controls, daily checks and safe operation. It does not contain repair procedures.
What you get with a PDF manual
All manuals on Manuals Outlet are PDF files, delivered as a download after payment. Nothing is shipped. A PDF is searchable (type "sideshift" or "relief valve" and jump straight to the page), you can print the section you need for the workshop, and you can keep it on a phone or tablet next to the machine. Each product page shows the title page and sample pages, so you can compare the publication number and machine range before you buy.
Already chasing a fault?
If you are here because something is broken, start with our JCB 3CX sideshift troubleshooting guide. For other JCB backhoe loaders such as the 3DX, 4DX, 2CX or 1CX, see all JCB backhoe loader manuals.
Not sure which manual fits your machine?
Send us the model and the serial number from the identification plate. We check it against the manual title pages and reply with the right one before you pay.
Ask about my serial numberFrequently asked questions
Is there one JCB 3CX service manual for all years?
No. JCB has issued separate service manuals for different serial number ranges and machine generations. Older machines use the lettered-section manuals (9803/3260, 9803/3270, 9803/3280, 9803/3290); later machines use the numbered-section 9813 manuals. Clamp pressures, wiring, engines and transmissions change between them.
Where is the serial number on a JCB 3CX?
On the machine identification plate. Each JCB service manual shows where the plate is and how to read it: in the older manuals under Machine Identification Plate in Section 1 (General Information), in the 9813 manuals under 01-06-03 Model and Serial Number.
Does a 3CX manual also cover the 4CX and the North American 214 and 217?
Many do. The 9803/3280 manual, for example, covers the 3CX, 4CX, 214e, 214, 215 and 217. JCB states the North American names in the manual: 3CX = 214, 4CX = 214S, 215S and 217S. Always check the model list on the title page.
What is the difference between a service manual and a parts manual?
A service manual explains how to test, dismantle, repair and adjust the machine, with specifications, torque settings and wiring diagrams. A parts manual is a catalog of exploded views and part numbers for ordering. For a repair you normally need the service manual.
